RAPHAEL’S “MADONNA DEL VELO” ARRIVES IN MATERA
The famous Raphael’s painting exhibited in Diocesano Museum in Matera
For the first time since 1676 the famous “Madonna del Velo” comes back in Italy, an oil painting kept inside Toledo Cathedral. The painting was gifted to the Cathedral by the Cardinal Pascual de Aragón, along with other works bought and received when he was Viceroy in Naples.
The painting is also known as “Madonna di Loreto”, due to a copy kept in the Sanctuary of Santa Casa, mistook for the original copy in the past.
In “Madonna del Velo” Raffello Sanzio highlights the contrast created by the dark background with the intense colours of the Virgin Mary’s dress and the whiteness of faces and sheets on which lies Baby Jesus, along with lights effects modulating subjects and elements in a different way.
The well-known painting is exhibited in MATA- Diocesano Museum of Matera from December 22 2019 to April 20 2020. The Museum is located in Via Riscatto, near the Cathedral.
Furthermore, Madonna del Velo Exhibiton falls on 500th anniversary of Raffaello disappearence and 750th anniversary of the opening of Matera Cathedral.
