BREAD AND SASSI

The theme of bread in a selection of works coming from the Uffizi Galley exhibited inside Fondazione Sassi, in Sasso Barisano

Bread has always been a local symbol of Matera tradition, its fragrance spread across the ancient districts. It meant union for a whole community, a moment of sharing and meeting.

Fondazione Sassi and Uffizi Galley cooperated to create the exhibition “Il Pane e i Sassi” (Bread and Sassi), in order to tell more about the primary food product par excellance, depicted in 15 works such as paintings on canvas, panels and copper along with a bronze sculpture. It’s a cultural record for the City of Sassi, which holds an exhibition coming from the biggest Italian museum for the first time.

There are four sections of works which highlight the historical, symbolic and religious value of bread represented through daily life scenes, still-life paintings and depictions of wheat poduction. There are also many works taken from the Old and New Testament, along with iconic paintings such as the Still-life of the well-known Spanish painter Diego Velázquez.
